Oxidising and Organic Peroxides

Class 5 substances are divided into two categories.
Class 5.1 – Oxidising Substances
Class 5.2 – Organic Peroxides

The hazard warning sign is yellow with the symbol being a flaming ‘O’ for Oxygen.

Class 5.1 – Oxidising Substances
Oxidising substances can be liquid or solid. The main hazard associated with them is that under certain circumstances they can give off oxygen and increase the risk of fire in other substances.

Class 5.2 – Organic Peroxides
Organic peroxides are unstable substances which can decompose, causing heat (which can cause further decomposition and further heat).
they may be liable to explosive decomposition
they may burn rapidly unlike oxidising substances
they may be sensitive to impact or friction
they may react dangerously with other substances
they may cause damage to the eyes
some are sensitive to contamination
some are sensitive to shock and are explosive
some may need to be desensitised for road transport
increase in temperature can trigger an explosion
some need to be refrigerated and transported in a controlled temperature environment
